10 reasons some people refuse to date someone who already has children
Dating someone who has children can mean entering a relationship that comes with existing responsibilities, family connections and emotional commitments. While many people are open to dating single parents, others would rather avoid the situation altogether. Their reasons are not always about disliking children.
1. They do not want to share their partner’s attention
A parent must dedicate time and energy to their children. Some people worry that they will always come second in the relationship.
2. They do not want complications involving an ex-partner
Co-parenting can require regular communication with a former partner. Some people are uncomfortable with the possibility of an ex remaining part of their partner’s life.
3. They are not ready to become a stepparent
Dating a parent may eventually involve helping raise a child, attending school events or taking on family responsibilities. Not everyone is prepared for that role.
4. They want to experience parenthood together for the first time
Some people want to marry someone with whom they can experience pregnancy, childbirth and raising their first child together, without an existing parenting arrangement.
5. They worry about financial responsibilities
A parent may already be paying school fees, healthcare costs, maintenance or other expenses. A new partner may worry about how those commitments will affect their shared financial plans.
6. They fear being rejected by the children
Even when a new partner has good intentions, children may struggle to accept another adult in their parent’s life. Some people do not want to enter a situation where they may never feel fully accepted.
7. They worry about conflicts over discipline
A person may disagree with how their partner raises their children but have limited authority to influence those decisions. This can become difficult if the relationship becomes serious.
8. They do not want to deal with ongoing conflict with an ex
If the former couple has a hostile relationship, disagreements over visitation, maintenance or parenting decisions can affect the new relationship.
9. They believe they may be expected to sacrifice too much
Some people worry that their partner’s existing responsibilities will require them to constantly adjust their plans, holidays, finances and personal time.
10. They simply prefer a partner with similar life circumstances
Some people want to begin a family with someone who is also entering parenthood for the first time. They may see this as a personal preference rather than a judgement against single parents.
