You Find A Director In The Service Owning A House Worth Billions, And You Cannot Do Anything” —Ndume

According to a video posted on Arise News on Monday October 19, 2026, Senator Ali Ndume said a director in the service can be found owning a house worth billions, and nothing can be done about it. He said the law currently makes it hard to act against such cases. He spoke while explaining why Nigeria needs a strong law to fight corruption.

Ndume was responding to a question on what he would do differently in another term. The senator is seeking re-election in Borno South and said he intends to continue his work. He said he has pending issues and will keep struggling for accountability beyond his senatorial district.

He said one of his dreams is to minimise corruption or put a check on it. The most important thing he wants to push for, he said, is the unexplained wealth act. He explained that it is a law that will hold people responsible for wealth they cannot account for.

In his words, Ndume said, “If you add up all his earnings and everything, it will not buy the house that he’s sleeping in. You find a director in the service owning a house that is worth billions.

“And you cannot do anything because the law says you have to prove beyond reasonable doubt that he stole that money, which is near impossible. But if you make a law that puts the burden of proof on him that owns the wealth, then you have a reduction in this,” he said.

Ndume said the law as it stands lets such people hide behind the requirement of proof beyond reasonable doubt. He said a law placing the burden of proof on the person who owns the wealth would reduce the problem. In his view, Nigeria needs a strong law to fight corruption.

The presenter described the proposal as impressive and said he would hold the senator to it.
