‘What he is doing is not normal’ — Former Barcelona defender amazed by Lamine Yamal’s meteoric rise

According to a report by Barca Universal on Tuesday October 20, 2026, former Barcelona defender Sylvinho has expressed his admiration for Lamine Yamal, describing the teenager’s remarkable performances as something extraordinary.

Yamal has continued to attract attention across the football world with his impressive displays for Barcelona, establishing himself as one of the most exciting attacking talents in the game.

Speaking to Radio MARCA’s La Tribu, Sylvinho admitted that the Spain international’s rapid development continues to surprise him.

“What he is doing is not normal. These types of players are different, very different,” the Brazilian said.

Sylvinho believes Yamal is becoming a more complete footballer with every passing game, particularly in his decision-making and understanding of what is required in different situations.

“He is gaining experience, he knows where he needs to go and where he shouldn’t. He keeps growing,” he added.

The former Barcelona defender also suggested that Yamal’s versatility could allow him to operate in different attacking positions, making him an even more valuable player for the Catalan club.

Under head coach Hansi Flick, Yamal has continued to develop beyond his traditional role on the wing. His ability to move into central areas, create chances and threaten defenders has added another dimension to Barcelona’s attacking play.

Sylvinho also praised Flick’s attacking philosophy, describing Barcelona as a dangerous side capable of competing with Europe’s strongest teams.

Discussing Barcelona’s upcoming Champions League encounter against Paris Saint-Germain, the Brazilian suggested that both teams possess the quality to reach the final.

“Both. They are tremendous teams. It could be the Champions League final,” he said.

The encounter is expected to provide another major test for Yamal, who will be eager to make his mark against elite opposition.

However, Sylvinho was more cautious when discussing Barcelona’s meeting with Real Madrid, warning that their impressive domestic form would not automatically guarantee success against a team with considerable individual quality.

For Barcelona, Yamal’s continued progress remains a major source of encouragement. His talent, growing maturity and ability to influence matches have made him an increasingly important figure in Flick’s plans.
