Tinubu Extends Tenures of Correctional, Immigration Service Chiefs

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved an 18-month extension of the tenures of the heads of the Nigerian Correctional Service and the Nigeria Immigration Service.

With the development, both officials will remain in office until 2028.

The affected officials are Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, and Kemi Nanna Nandap, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service.

According to a statement issued by the Presidency on Monday, October 19, Nwakuche’s tenure will now end on May 26, 2028, while Nandap is expected to remain in office until June 30, 2028.

The approval followed a recommendation by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, to address succession gaps in the two services and provide sufficient time for the relevant board to appoint their successors.

The Presidency said the extension would enable the services to maintain continuity in their leadership while preparations are made for the appointment of new heads.

Tinubu also commended both officials for the reforms recorded under their leadership and urged them to sustain the progress made so far.

The statement said the president charged Nwakuche and Nandap to consolidate the gains achieved during their respective tenures as they continue to lead the two agencies responsible for correctional administration and immigration services in Nigeria.

Nwakuche was nominated by Tinubu as Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service in December 2024, while the Senate confirmed his appointment in March 2025.

Nandap, on the other hand, was nominated as Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service on February 21, 2024. The Senate confirmed her appointment on March 1, 2024.

The announcement also follows recent government efforts to strengthen security infrastructure and improve the operational capacity of federal agencies.

Three days earlier, it was reported that Tinubu had approved the acquisition of additional railway coaches and security equipment as part of efforts to improve railway transportation and address threats posed by banditry, kidnapping and vandalism.

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Funso Adebiyi, disclosed the railway plan during an inspection of the ongoing Kano–Maradi railway project.

Adebiyi said the government had approved the procurement of surveillance equipment to protect railway infrastructure and improve safety along train routes. He also disclosed that the Federal Government was working to train Nigerian railway personnel to operate and maintain the additional coaches.
