CHAOS erupted in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain, yesterday afternoon after angry mense reportedly got hold of a man they suspect of being involved in the murder of a young woman whose burnt body was discovered in the area over the weekend.
Die ding het geruk, with stun grenades being deployed, residents throwing stones and tyres burning as tensions escalate between members of the community and law enforcement officers.
The unfolding confrontation has turned parts of the neighbourhood into a scene of unrest, with police attempting to contain the situation.
According to information received by the Daily Voice sister publication, Cape Argus, the violence erupted after community members confronted a man they believed was linked to the killing, leaving residents shocked and demanding justice.
It has not yet been confirmed whether the man has been arrested or officially identified as a suspect in the murder investigation.
Ward councillor Norman Adonis has appealed to residents to remain cautious and not to take the law into their own hands as tensions continue to escalate.
Adonis said he understood the community’s frustration and anger following the discovery of the body but urged residents not to participate in acts of violence or vigilantism.
The unrest follows the discovery of a severely burnt body at the corner of Hugenote Street and AZ Berman Drive in Tafelsig on Saturday, 17 October.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Frederick van Wyk previously confirmed that officers received a complaint at approximately 12.46pm about a body found burning in the area.
“The body was burned beyond recognition,” Van Wyk said.
Police registered a murder case for investigation, while a post-mortem examination was requested to establish the deceased’s identity, sex and cause of death.
The discovery sparked widespread outrage, with community members expressing horror at the circumstances surrounding the killing.
On Tuesday, however, tensions reached boiling point as residents reportedly took matters into their own hands.
The deployment of stun grenades, stone-throwing and burning tyres have added to an already dangerous situation, with the scene remaining active.
It remains unclear whether anyone has sustained injuries during the unrest or whether additional arrests have been made.
