Small-Scale Miners Outshine Large-Scale Gold Producers for Second Year Running – Sammy Gyamfi
The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, has stated that the artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector has demonstrated greater potential than the large-scale gold sector in Ghana for two consecutive years.
Gyamfi made this observation while speaking at the African Minerals Policy Forum, held under the theme “Mining in Motion.” His remarks shed light on the growing significance of small-scale mining within Ghana’s gold industry and its increasingly prominent role in the nation’s mineral output.
According to the Gold Board CEO, the ASM sector’s performance over the past two years signals a shift in the dynamics of Ghana’s gold production landscape. The small-scale mining segment, he noted, has consistently shown stronger prospects and contributions compared to the large-scale gold sector during this period.
His comments at the continental forum underscore the need for policymakers and industry stakeholders to pay closer attention to the ASM sector, which has long been viewed as informal and less regulated than large-scale mining. Gyamfi’s assessment suggests that with proper support and regulation, small-scale mining could become an even more significant driver of Ghana’s gold economy.
The African Minerals Policy Forum: Mining in Motion brings together industry leaders, government officials, and policy experts to discuss the future of mining across the continent. Gyamfi’s participation provided an opportunity to highlight Ghana’s experience and the evolving role of small-scale mining in the country’s mineral wealth creation.
His statement also raises important questions about how the sector can be better structured to maximise its benefits while addressing challenges such as illegal mining and environmental degradation. The growing potential of the ASM sector, as highlighted by the Gold Board CEO, points to the need for policies that harness its strengths while mitigating its risks.
Gyamfi’s remarks are expected to stimulate further discussion on the future of Ghana’s mining industry and the balance between small-scale and large-scale operations.
