Ruto Highlights Key Shift as Kenya Celebrates 63rd Mashujaa Day
President William Ruto has highlighted the growing importance of creativity, technology and innovation in Kenya’s economic transformation as the country marked the 63rd Mashujaa Day celebrations on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.
In a message shared on social media, the President recognised Kenyans who are using their talents and innovative ideas to create employment, establish businesses and open new economic opportunities.
Ruto linked the sacrifices made by Kenya’s freedom fighters to the present generation’s efforts to achieve economic independence, noting that creativity and technological advancement were becoming important tools for national progress.
He also celebrated individuals working in the creative economy, including artists and digital content creators, for using their skills to build sustainable livelihoods and contribute to the country’s development.
His remarks came as national celebrations took place at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, where he presided over the event attended by government officials, political leaders and members of the public.
This year’s celebrations involved Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet counties, reflecting the government’s tradition of rotating national holiday events across different parts of the country.
Mashujaa Day is observed annually on October 20 to honour Kenyans whose sacrifices and achievements have contributed to the nation’s history and development.
The holiday was originally known as Kenyatta Day, commemorating the detention of key independence leaders in 1952. It was renamed Mashujaa Day following the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution, expanding recognition to heroes from various sectors.
The theme for the 2026 celebrations focuses on security, sports and the finance sector, highlighting their significance in strengthening the country’s economy.
Last year’s national celebrations were held at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County.
