Real Madrid Midfielder Could Play in Makeshift Role in El Clasico vs Barcelona

According to a report by Madrid Universal on Tuesday October 20, 2026, Real Madrid captain Federico Valverde could occupy an unfamiliar position when his team face Barcelona in Sunday’s El Clasico, with Jose Mourinho considering how best to utilise the midfielder’s versatility.

According to reports, the Uruguayan is expected to feature on the right flank, although it remains uncertain whether he will start at right-back or in a more advanced role.

Valverde impressed at right-back during Real Madrid’s recent victory over Sevilla. He also performed well in the same position during their Champions League comeback against AS Roma, strengthening his chances of being deployed there again.

Neither Trent Alexander-Arnold nor Denzel Dumfries has completely convinced in the role, giving Valverde another opportunity to provide a reliable solution.
