Following a wild win over Real Betis to maintain their perfect record in La Liga at the weekend, Barcelona travel to the French capital for a massive Champions League test as they face reigning back-to-back champions Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday night.

Barça come into this one looking to make it three wins out of three in the League Phase and continue their historic start to the new campaign, and this is undoubtedly their toughest obstacle yet as they’ll test themselves against the very best team Europe has to offer.

PSG and Barça have been near mirror images of each other this season: Hansi Flick has evolved his side tactically to a much more fluid attacking setup, using a 4-3-3 formation to bring Spain captain Rodri into the team and dominate midfield while using his famous high press to create high turnovers and overwhelm the opponent.

That is the exact formula Luis Enrique used to win the Champions League in the last two seasons, and the prospect of a high-scoring affair between these two makes this the most anticipated game of the League Phase. Both teams will attack and take risks, and there will be many chances and goals for both sides.

There has been a good debate among Barça fans in recent days about just how much this game actually means in the grand scheme of things. On the one hand, this is Matchday 3 of the League Phase and the new format pretty much guarantees that a big club with title aspirations will move on the knockout rounds, even if they need to go through the Playoffs first.

PSG themselves proved in the last two years that going through the Playoffs doesn’t hinder a top team’s chances of winning it all, and finishing in the Top 8 has proven to not be as crucial as it seemed when the new format was first introduced.

Barça won’t win the Champions League if they beat PSG, just like it won’t be the end of the world if they lose it — especially given the many absences at the back and the disrupted travel schedule that limited the amount of time they’ve spent preparing for this one.

On the other hand, this is a chance for Barça to test themselves against the very best and find out what they need to correct so they’re better prepared for a possible rematch down the road. Barça have won just one of their last five meetings with PSG, and a victory at the French capital would be a huge boost of confidence — especially with El Clásico right around the corner.

So the answer about how much this one means, as with many other things in life, lies somewhere in the middle: Barça would love to win it, but a loss doesn’t mean everything is bad either. This team is really good and capable of winning the Champions League, and one game in October doesn’t change that fact, regardless of the final result.

This will be a lot of fun, and there is no reason to believe Barça will be embarrassed in any way. They’re too good for that, so Barça fans should enjoy it and hope to see their team compete at the highest level against the highest level of competition.

Barcelona (4-3-3): Joan; Espart, Cubarsí, Martín, Cancelo; Fermín, Rodri, Pedri; Yamal, Raphinha, Gordon

PSG (4-3-3): Safonov; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Digne; Neves, Vitinha, Fabián; Doué, Dembélé, Kvaratskhelia

The absences in defense certainly make this much more challenging for Barça, but I still believe they’ll compete and cause PSG plenty of problems. The result doesn’t matter that much, but I still think we’ll get something good out of this: 3-3 draw.
