Ghana was awarded the hosting rights in April 2026, with the tournament scheduled for March 2027 to coincide with the country’s 70th Independence anniversary celebrations.

However, with less than five months remaining before the competition, there has been no publicly documented evidence of major infrastructure upgrades at the proposed venues, raising concerns about the pace of preparations.

Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, Cape Coast Stadium and the University of Ghana Stadium have been earmarked for the tournament, while the Accra Sports Stadium is also under consideration.

The condition of these facilities remains a major concern, particularly as improvements will be needed to ensure they meet the Confederation of African Football’s requirements.

The apparent lack of urgency in securing funding and commencing the necessary works has increased fears that Ghana could struggle to meet its hosting obligations.

The stakes are significant for the country, which last hosted the U-20 AFCON in 1999, when the Black Satellites won the title on home soil.

Losing the hosting rights would be a major setback for Ghanaian football, especially in a year when the country intends to celebrate seven decades of independence.

The situation also raises questions about the government’s commitment to supporting the tournament and whether the relevant authorities can deliver the required facilities within the available timeframe.

CAF has not announced any decision to withdraw Ghana’s hosting rights. However, the authorities must demonstrate tangible progress on funding, stadium upgrades and logistical preparations to prevent the hosting dream from slipping away.

With March approaching, time is becoming an increasingly important factor in Ghana’s efforts to deliver the tournament as planned.
