Petrol Price Relief Expected in November as Rand Strengthens
South African motorists may receive some relief at the fuel pumps in November, following positive early indicators from the currency and oil markets.
The South African rand held steady in early trade on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. According to Reuters, the rand traded at R16.4150 against the dollar at 06:00 GMT, showing resilience ahead of key economic announcements.
This stability comes as investors await two major events. Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana will present the medium-term budget policy statement on Wednesday, while Statistics South Africa will release consumer inflation and retail sales data on the same day.
According to BusinessTech, early unaudited data from the Central Energy Fund suggests a petrol price decrease could be on the cards for November, thanks to a stronger rand and softer international oil prices. Oil prices were trading at $109.90 a barrel.
Economists polled by Reuters expect headline inflation to rise to 4.7% in September from 4.4% in August, while retail sales growth is expected to slow to 3.0% in August.
The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy is expected to announce the official fuel price adjustment in the last week of October. Motorists are advised to follow official channels for confirmed prices.
