Pakistan Army Chief Arrives in Tehran as Iran Talk Turn to War Negotiations and Regional Cooperation

According to a report by Al Jazeera on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, has arrived in Tehran for talks with senior Iranian officials, with discussions expected to cover negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing war and efforts to strengthen bilateral relations.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Baqaei said the meetings would address “issues concerning the negotiations.” However, he emphasised that the discussions would focus primarily on relations between the two countries and opportunities to expand cooperation.

The visit comes as Pakistan continues to play a key mediating role in efforts to secure an end to the conflict. Despite repeated diplomatic initiatives, previous attempts have failed to produce a lasting agreement.

Munir’s arrival marks his fifth visit to Iran since a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in Islamabad in June 2026, highlighting continued diplomatic engagement between the neighbouring countries as efforts to advance negotiations continue.

During the visit, Munir is expected to meet senior Iranian officials to discuss regional diplomacy and bilateral cooperation. However, the full scope of the discussions and whether they will produce progress in the broader negotiations remain uncertain.

A photograph released by Iran’s Islamic Consultative Assembly News Agency (ICANA) shows Iranian Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf meeting Munir in Tehran on Monday, August 24, 2026.

The photograph, credited to Mahmoud Hosseini of ICANA and distributed by the Associated Press, documents the meeting between the two officials as Pakistan continues its mediation efforts.

The visit underscores Islamabad’s ongoing diplomatic involvement in attempts to resolve the conflict, while Tehran has indicated that strengthening bilateral relations remains a key priority alongside discussions related to the negotiations.
