Osahene My Foot, All He Knows Is Calling Himself Osahene-New Winneba Residents Blast Afenyo-Markin

Residents of New Winneba have criticised Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin over the unresolved land dispute between communities in the Effutu and Gomoa areas, blaming the prolonged conflict for failing to prevent violence that reportedly left three people dead and 15 others injured. Some residents accused the MP of focusing more on his public image than finding a lasting solution.

Afenyo-Markin, popularly known as Osahene, called on security agencies to investigate the incident, identify those responsible and establish how weapons allegedly used in the attack were obtained. He questioned how a group of youths reportedly armed with guns, machetes and clubs could enter the community during daylight without being intercepted.

He urged the Central Regional Police Command to work with national police authorities to investigate the violence involving individuals reportedly from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze. He also warned residents against retaliation, stressing that nobody should take the law into their own hands.

However, residents interviewed by Channel One TV rejected his response, arguing that he should have done more to address the underlying dispute before it escalated. One resident mocked the Osahene title, saying the MP frequently spoke in Parliament but had failed to resolve the conflict affecting his constituency.

Another questioned how someone regarded as a great warrior could allow members of his community to suffer such losses. The residents called on Afenyo-Markin to engage traditional leaders from Effutu and Gomoa in negotiations aimed at settling the boundary disagreement permanently.

The criticism has generated reactions online, with some defending Afenyo-Markin’s parliamentary record while others argue that leadership should also be demonstrated through practical solutions to local problems.

Traditional leaders have appealed for calm, while police reportedly increased their presence in New Winneba as investigations continued. Residents are demanding lasting peace and concrete efforts to prevent further violence.
