New Report Reveals Kenya’s Biggest Supermarkets After Nakumatt and Tuskys Collapse
Naivas has emerged as Kenya’s largest supermarket chain, commanding the biggest share of modern grocery sales as the retail industry continues to adjust following the collapse of former giants Nakumatt and Tuskys.
A new industry report places Naivas ahead of its closest competitors, Quickmart and Carrefour, highlighting how the country’s supermarket landscape has changed over the years.
According to figures contained in Quickmart PLC’s initial public offering (IPO) information memorandum, which cites research by Sagaci Research, Naivas controls 31 per cent of supermarket sales. Quickmart follows with 15 per cent, while Carrefour holds 14 per cent.
Together, the three retailers account for 60 per cent of the market, demonstrating their growing influence in Kenya’s modern grocery business.
Other players have smaller shares, with Magunas accounting for six per cent and Foodplus holding four per cent. The remaining 29 per cent is distributed among other retailers operating in different parts of the country.
Naivas’ position is supported by its extensive branch network. Disclosures by shareholder IBL Group indicate that the retailer operated 108 stores and generated approximately KSh114 billion in sales during the financial year ending June 2025.
Quickmart has also expanded since opening its first outlet in Nakuru in 2006. The chain now operates more than 70 branches across 16 counties and serves approximately five million customers every month.
Meanwhile, Carrefour, operated in Kenya by Majid Al Futtaim, remains a major competitor in the sector.
Despite the dominance of these retailers, modern grocery shopping still accounts for a relatively small portion of Kenya’s wider retail economy. The report estimates the national retail market at approximately KSh3 trillion, with modern retail representing about KSh400 billion.
Informal traders and neighbourhood shops continue to attract customers through flexible pricing, smaller purchase quantities and, in some communities, access to credit.
The number of modern retail outlets has increased from 339 in 2020 to approximately 520 in 2025, signalling continued expansion.
