MDA Dilemma

MDA Dilemma

Pakistan’s continued coordination with its Makkah Defence Alliance partners is both necessary and welcome in these troubling times. The meeting between Field Marshal Asim Munir and the new Saudi ambassador demonstrates Islamabad’s commitment to Riyadh as the regional security situation deteriorates.

The conflict between Saudi Arabia and Ansarullah is approaching a dangerous tipping point. With commercial activities disrupted in parts of Riyadh, and conferences and development projects facing uncertainty, the consequences of continued hostilities are becoming apparent. What began as another confrontation in the Arabian Peninsula threatens to engulf the wider region.

There are powerful interests that would welcome such an escalation. Israel, the United States and the UAE stand to benefit from a prolonged conflict that could draw Pakistan and Turkiye into a wider military confrontation, weakening the regional powers involved.

Pakistan, bound by its commitments under the MDA, must exercise considerable diplomatic caution. Its obligations towards Saudi Arabia are clear, but fulfilling them must not mean embracing an open-ended military confrontation. Collective defence should deter war, not become the mechanism through which a regional conflagration is triggered.

The immediate objective must be a negotiated settlement between Riyadh and Ansarullah, with all parties recognising that mutual destruction serves nobody’s interests. Pakistan and Turkiye must pursue this outcome through sustained diplomatic engagement.

This goes beyond keeping Pakistani soldiers out of another land war in the Arabian Peninsula. The stability of the Middle East and the economic future of the wider region are at stake. Pakistan must use its influence within the alliance to advance peace rather than facilitate another disastrous war.
