Mashujaa Day: Drama as President Ruto Is Left Exposed to the Scorching Sun at Eldoret Stadium

President William Ruto and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed were among several top leaders who endured the scorching sun during this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

The national ceremony attracted senior government officials, foreign dignitaries and thousands of Kenyans. However, the unfinished roof at the stadium became a major talking point as guests struggled with the intense heat during the event.

Abiy, who attended the celebrations as the chief guest, was spotted using a piece of paper to shield his face from the direct sunlight while seated at the VIP podium.

Ruto also appeared uncomfortable as he narrowed his eyes against the bright sunshine while watching military aircraft perform an aerial display above the stadium.

Other prominent leaders, including Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and First Lady Rachel Ruto, were also affected by the lack of adequate shade.

Some members of the public sitting in the stands resorted to using umbrellas to protect themselves from the heat.

Although a canopy had been erected over part of the VIP podium, it failed to provide sufficient cover for everyone.Several dignitaries were therefore left exposed to the sun during portions of the celebrations.

The incident drew attention to the ongoing renovation of Kipchoge Keino Stadium, which had been undergoing major upgrades ahead of the national holiday.

As of October 12, the facility was reportedly 78 per cent complete, with workers still putting up the roof just days before the celebrations.

More than 659 workers had been deployed to accelerate construction and prepare the stadium for the October 20 event.

The government had prioritised finishing the essential sections required to host the President, international guests and thousands of Kenyans, even as other construction activities remained incomplete.Kipchoge Keino Stadium has a seating capacity of approximately 15,000 people. Additional arrangements were also made to accommodate more attendees during the national celebrations.

Construction is expected to continue after Mashujaa Day, with the entire project scheduled for completion by the end of December 2026.

The incident highlighted the challenges of completing major public projects within tight deadlines, with the unfinished roofing becoming evident during a national event attended by Kenya’s top leadership and international visitors.
