Manchester United suffer major injury setbacks as Michael Carrick provides squad update

According to a report by London Evening Standard on Tuesday October 20, 2026, Manchester United could miss several key players for Wednesday’s Champions League trip to Como, with Michael Carrick managing multiple injury concerns as the Red Devils desperately seek their first victory in six matches.

Their 1-1 draw against Leeds United extended United’s winless run, increasing pressure ahead of the European fixture. Lisandro Martinez was substituted at half-time after suffering a thigh problem, ruling him out against Como.

Luke Shaw, Kobbie Mainoo and Ayden Heaven also missed the Leeds encounter, while Marcus Rashford has recently started matches on the bench. Carrick confirmed several absences during his latest squad update.

The United manager explained Martinez’s injury was not particularly serious, although the Argentine would miss the upcoming match. Mainoo needs approximately another 10 days to recover, while Shaw faces a longer spell sidelined.

Carrick added that Heaven was suffering from illness, while Rashford continues experiencing a hip problem. The club are working to resolve the issue as they assess his availability for upcoming matches.

United also face difficulties at left-back, with Shaw and alternative Patrick Dorgu both sidelined by hamstring injuries. Academy graduate Harry Amass has travelled with the squad and could receive an opportunity.

Carrick confirmed Amass was genuinely in contention for selection, explaining that young players eventually need opportunities. The teenager could therefore feature against Como as United consider their available defensive options.

Benjamin Sesko remains unavailable because of a persistent shin problem dating back to the end of last season. Carrick hopes the club will have a clearer picture of the striker’s condition soon.

The manager expects further information by the end of the week, confirming that work is ongoing. United must now navigate their growing injury problems while attempting to improve their disappointing results against Como.
