Man Utd receive Antonio Conte verdict amid Michael Carrick sack speculation

According to a report by Football Transfer on Tuesday October 20, 2026, Manchester United have been advised against appointing Antonio Conte if the club decides to dismiss Michael Carrick, with concerns growing over whether the Italian manager’s demanding personality would suit the struggling squad.

Carrick is facing mounting pressure following Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Leeds United, a result that left United enduring their worst start to a season since 1986. The Red Devils have won just two of their opening ten matches, with performances lacking intensity and attacking sharpness.

Carrick became United’s permanent head coach in May after guiding the team to Champions League qualification during his interim spell last season. However, Conte has emerged as a potential successor should the club’s hierarchy decide to make another managerial change.

ESPN senior football writer Mark Ogden believes appointing the former Chelsea boss would carry significant risks, despite his reputation for delivering trophies. Conte is known for his confrontational approach towards players and club executives, with several previous managerial departures ending acrimoniously.

“The problem with Conte is that there are plenty of negatives,” Ogden explained, arguing that the disadvantages could outweigh the benefits. Although United might welcome a demanding manager capable of challenging underperforming players, Conte’s methods could create further problems.

Ogden warned that Conte’s intense demands might negatively affect a squad that has struggled to demonstrate resilience. He also questioned whether the Italian could provide the stability United require, considering his relatively short spells at previous clubs.

Since leaving Juventus to manage Italy in 2014, Conte has held four club managerial positions without remaining at any for more than two years. Ogden believes United should consider this record before choosing their next long-term manager.

Conte recently fuelled speculation about a possible move by telling The Athletic he wanted to manage a sleeping giant. Although many interpreted his comments as a reference to United, no appointment has been confirmed.

United have not won the Premier League since 2012/13 or the Champions League since 2007/08. Conte has won domestic league titles with Chelsea, Juventus, Inter Milan and Napoli, strengthening his managerial credentials.

Carrick will attempt to ease the pressure when United face Como in the Champions League on Wednesday, before hosting Bournemouth on Sunday, as both teams seek improved Premier League results.
