Man City Face Possible Extended Championship Stay As Premier League Seek EFL Support Over Financial Breaches
Share on Twitter Manchester City could face more than one season outside the Premier League, with the English Football League (EFL) reportedly expected to play a crucial role in determining the extent of their punishment for financial breaches.
The reigning Premier League leaders have appealed against a verdict finding them guilty of 114 charges relating to financial irregularities, with uncertainty surrounding the sanctions they could face if their appeal is unsuccessful.
According to the Mirror, as reported by the Daily Mail, a substantial points deduction that would effectively guarantee City’s relegation to the Championship is considered one of the most likely outcomes.
However, the punishment could extend beyond their first season in the second tier, with reports suggesting another points deduction may be imposed during the following campaign.
Such a move would potentially prevent City from securing an immediate return to the Premier League.
The proposed arrangement would require the cooperation of the EFL, which operates independently of the Premier League and is not automatically bound to enforce sanctions imposed by the top-flight governing body.
Nevertheless, the EFL is reportedly expected to cooperate should the Premier League seek to extend City’s punishment into the Championship.
City could also be handed a record-breaking financial penalty over allegations involving inflated sponsorship arrangements and other spending violations between 2009 and 2018.
Another possible sanction under consideration is relegation directly to League Two, although implementing such a punishment would present additional complications because of the EFL’s independent authority.
There have also been calls for City to be stripped of the three Premier League titles they won during the period covered by the financial charges.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding their future, City have maintained an impressive run of form under Enzo Maresca, who replaced Pep Guardiola as manager.
After a difficult start to life under the Italian tactician, the Cityzens have won all seven of their Premier League matches this season.
Their latest victory came against Ipswich Town on Saturday, when they secured a 3-2 win to move three points clear of defending champions Arsenal at the top of the standings.
However, City’s domestic form has contrasted with their recent struggles in Europe, having suffered a 4-2 home defeat against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
The encounter also marked Guardiola’s return to the Etihad Stadium for the first time since the verdict against his former club was announced.

While City continue to challenge for silverware on the pitch, the outcome of their appeal could have far-reaching consequences for their immediate future.
The Premier League’s ability to enforce an extended period outside the top flight would depend significantly on the EFL’s willingness to cooperate.
For now, the length and nature of any punishment remain uncertain, with City’s appeal yet to be resolved.
