Major Blow to Ruto as Key Ally Hints at Dumping UDA Ahead of 2027 Elections
Nyeri Town Member of Parliament Duncan Maina Mathenge has hinted at a possible departure from the ruling United Democratic Alliance, saying his next political move will depend on the wishes of his constituents ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The first-term legislator said he is consulting residents to establish the political direction they want him to pursue. Mathenge maintained that the views of his supporters would play a significant role in determining his political future.
Mathenge recalled that during the 2022 General Election, his supporters encouraged him to contest on a UDA ticket. He followed their advice and eventually defeated the then incumbent Nyeri Town MP, Ngunjiri Wambugu.
His latest remarks have raised questions about whether he will continue supporting the ruling party or consider joining another political outfit. However, Mathenge has not publicly confirmed any decision to leave UDA or identified an alternative party.
The lawmaker’s statement comes amid growing political realignments in the Mount Kenya region, where several leaders are reconsidering their political strategies ahead of the next general election as competition for regional influence intensifies.
Mathenge’s Kieni counterpart, Njoroge Wainaina Chieni, recently announced the launch of his new political outfit, the Ufanisi Kenya Party. The development has added to discussions about possible political movements away from UDA within the region.
The emergence of alternative political parties could influence how Mount Kenya leaders position themselves before 2027. Legislators are increasingly facing decisions about party loyalty, constituent expectations and the political alliances they believe will strengthen their re-election prospects.
For Mathenge, the central question remains whether his consultations will lead him to maintain his UDA affiliation or pursue a different political path. His decision could also shape his relationship with President William Ruto’s re-election campaign.
