Luis Enrique Reveals How PSG Plan to Stop Yamal Ahead of Barcelona Clash: ‘He must not get the ball

According to a report by Barca Universal published on Monday, October 19, 2026, Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has explained that controlling possession will be crucial to containing Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal when the two European giants meet in the UEFA Champions League.

The Spanish tactician believes PSG must prevent Barcelona from dominating the ball if they hope to reduce the teenager’s influence and secure a positive result against Hansi Flick’s side.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Enrique discussed the challenges awaiting his team ahead of the highly anticipated encounter. Barcelona enter the fixture after winning their opening 11 matches of the season, making them a significant threat to PSG’s ambitions.

The French champions will have an opportunity to become the first team to defeat Barcelona this campaign. However, Enrique cautioned against treating the encounter as a final, pointing out that the competition remains in its early stages.

The PSG manager identified possession as the most effective way to limit Yamal’s attacking influence, acknowledging the danger the young winger poses whenever he receives the ball in promising positions.

“It’s very simple: we mustn’t let him get the ball, because if he does, he’s a threat. The best way to defend against Lamine is to ensure Barça don’t have the ball,” Enrique explained.

Despite highlighting Yamal’s importance, Enrique warned that Barcelona have several other players capable of deciding the contest. He mentioned Raphinha, Pedri and Pau Cubarsi among the individuals who could create difficulties for PSG if given sufficient space and time.

Enrique also rejected comparisons between Yamal and former Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi, insisting that the teenager should be allowed to establish his own identity rather than being measured against another legendary player.

“Lamine Yamal wants to be Lamine Yamal. We cannot compare him to Messi or anyone else,” he added.

The PSG coach expects an entertaining contest between two teams that prefer to control matches through possession and attacking football. He stressed that teamwork, tactical discipline and collective performances would be more important than relying exclusively on individual brilliance.

Enrique also acknowledged the significance of Barcelona’s impressive unbeaten start, describing their record as an additional motivation for his players to produce a strong performance.

The fixture carries special meaning for Enrique, who previously represented Barcelona as a player and later managed the Catalan club. Despite his emotional connection, he remains focused on guiding PSG to victory.

He praised Flick’s work with Barcelona and believes his team must approach the encounter with confidence and attacking intent. Nevertheless, PSG will need to execute their strategy effectively if they are to overcome Barcelona’s impressive form and prevent Yamal from influencing the outcome.
