JPMorgan deposits ₦50bn as Nigeria licence nears

JPMorgan Chase has deposited ₦50 billion, equivalent to about $38 million, with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as it advances its application for a licence to operate a merchant bank in Nigeria.

The deposit marks a significant step in the United States banking giant’s proposed expansion into Africa’s largest economy, with the payment reportedly forming part of the final regulatory requirements for approval.

However, the bank is yet to receive its operating licence from the CBN, which must authorise the proposed operation before it can commence business.

JPMorgan’s planned entry could expand competition in Nigeria’s financial services market and create additional opportunities for businesses seeking corporate financing, investment advisory and other specialised banking services.

Merchant banks typically provide services such as corporate finance, securities trading, investment advisory and financing for businesses and institutional clients.

The proposed entry comes as international financial institutions continue to explore opportunities in Nigeria’s financial sector, which serves businesses across industries including energy, infrastructure, manufacturing and telecommunications.

The timing of JPMorgan’s proposed launch will depend on the CBN’s final regulatory decision.
