Is marriage the place where women’s dreams go to die? Kiki Osinbajo quizzes

Nigerian media personality Kiki Osinbajo has questioned why online discussions about marriage place so much emphasis on women’s duties as wives while paying less attention to what men are expected to contribute to their marriages.

In a video shared on X, Kiki expressed frustration with content creators who constantly tell women how to behave in marriage, arguing that the same energy is rarely directed at men.

“I see wives, wives, wives. Is marriage the place where women’s dreams go to die, or they become slaves just because they’re married?” she asked.

Kiki said she was tired of seeing videos and podcast discussions that appeared to place the burden of maintaining a marriage on women, with little consideration for their personal ambitions, needs and well-being.

She illustrated her concerns with a video she had watched featuring a man discussing his expectations of his wife when they grow old.

According to Kiki, the man argued that his wife should not leave him for three years in his 80s because she would become his nurse and mother at that stage of his life.

The comment prompted her to question whether the woman would not also need care and support as she aged.

“How old is this wife? Does she not need a mother and a nurse as well?” Kiki asked.

She argued that conversations about marriage should recognise that women also grow old, have personal needs and may require care from their partners.

Kiki further questioned why discussions about marriage frequently revolve around what wives should do rather than encouraging husbands to fulfil their own responsibilities.

“I don’t see the same energy being passed on to men,” she said, adding that she had not seen enough podcast discussions centred on what men needed to do to become better husbands.

Her comments challenge the approach to marriage advice that places women under constant scrutiny while giving comparatively less attention to the expectations placed on men.

Kiki also directed her message at unmarried women who regularly encounter such content online, asking whether they were equally tired of the recurring conversations about what wives should do.

“Are you not tired of seeing content like this?” she asked.
