IOL Apologises to EFF’s Joburg Mayoral Candidate Dr Tlaleng Mofokeng Over Misleading Caption
IOL has issued a formal apology to Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Johannesburg mayoral candidate Dr Tlaleng Mofokeng following an incorrectly worded social media caption published during its Town Hall Discussion at the Joburg Theatre.
In an apology statement, IOL acknowledged that the caption had misrepresented the circumstances surrounding Dr Mofokeng’s planned departure from the event, prompting the publication to clarify what had happened.
According to IOL, Dr Mofokeng had informed the moderator, IOL deputy editor Lee Rondganger, that she needed to leave at 6pm because of prior commitments. Her request was accepted, the publication confirmed.
However, the social media team covering the discussion was unaware of the arrangement, resulting in the publication of an inaccurate caption.
IOL explained that the mistake was identified and addressed during a debriefing session, after which the affected social media posts were immediately removed.
The publication apologised directly to Dr Mofokeng and the EFF, expressing regret over the incident.
The apology comes amid public and political scrutiny of how media organisations report on political candidates, particularly during election-related engagements where accurate captions and context are essential to maintaining public trust.
Although IOL attributed the incident to a communication gap between the event’s moderator and its social media team, the episode highlights the importance of proper coordination and fact-checking before publishing content that could create a misleading impression about a political figure.
For Dr Mofokeng and the EFF, the clarification establishes that her planned departure at 6pm had been communicated to the moderator beforehand and was not unexpected by the event’s organisers.
IOL’s decision to remove the posts and issue a formal apology represents an acknowledgment of the error and an effort to correct the public record.
The publication concluded its statement by apologising once again to Dr Mofokeng and the EFF.
The incident serves as a reminder that accuracy, context and effective communication remain critical responsibilities for media organisations when covering political events.
