I have received calls from football people – Andre Ayew on contesting for GFA presidency

Former Black Stars captain André Dede Ayew has confirmed that he has received calls from football stakeholders encouraging discussions about a possible bid for the presidency of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

However, the experienced forward has played down speculation about his political ambitions within football administration, insisting that his immediate priority is to help improve Ghanaian football rather than focus on who will lead the association in the future.

Ayew made the remarks during an appearance on the Obi One Podcast, hosted by former Nigeria and Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi. His comments come amid growing public discussion about whether he could contest the GFA presidency in the next elections, expected in 2027.

“Rumours? What I’m saying is that what’s important is what the people want, what the football people want. As you say, rumours. Yes, when the rumours started, I’ve been having phone calls from people or football people, etc,” Ayew said, according to Adomonline.

Despite confirming the calls, Ayew stressed that Ghana football must begin addressing its challenges immediately. He urged those currently in charge of the sport to take responsibility for initiating reforms rather than allowing conversations about future leadership to overshadow the work that needs to be done.

“What I want is our football to grow. So who’s going to make it grow? It has to grow from those in power now. We have to start it now, not tomorrow,” he added.

Ayew said his experience with the national team over approximately 17 to 18 years had exposed him to different football administrations and the challenges confronting the game. He believes that experience, alongside his involvement in club management, has given him valuable insight into the sport’s development.

The former captain also expressed interest in working with other former footballers, many of whom he believes have the knowledge and experience to contribute to Ghana football but have not always been given the opportunity.

Beyond leadership speculation, Ayew has called for better infrastructure, improved planning and responsible management of football resources. He has argued that investors would be more willing to support the sport if they were confident that funds were being used effectively.

Former Nigerian international John Mikel Obi has publicly expressed support for Ayew’s possible move into football administration, even indicating his willingness to campaign for him.

Nevertheless, Ayew has not formally declared his intention to contest the GFA presidency. He maintains that the immediate concern should be improving the game, while any future leadership decision must take into account the wishes of football stakeholders and the wider public.
