Gold Stars and Medeama yet to receive GPL prize money – George Afriyie alleges

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) vice-president George Afriyie has alleged that Bibiani Gold Stars and Medeama SC are yet to receive their prize money for winning the Ghana Premier League.

Gold Stars won the 2024/25 league title before Medeama were crowned champions at the end of the 2025/26 season.

Ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, it was announced that each of the 18 Premier League clubs would receive GH₵1m, with the total prize money set at GH₵2m.

However, Afriyie claims the two champions are still awaiting their respective payments, raising concerns about the financial support available to Ghanaian clubs competing in domestic and continental competitions.

“Now we play the league, and it ends; the winner will get maybe one million Ghana cedis. But, as far as I’m concerned, Gold Stars won the league and have still not received their prize money, as well as Medeama SC,” he told Ahenfie FM.

Afriyie warned that delays in paying prize money could undermine clubs’ preparations for continental assignments, particularly their ability to recruit players and cover travel and other logistical expenses.

“If the team that won the league is entitled to prize money of about one million Ghana cedis, it can prepare to play in Africa, won’t get it, and will go to Africa, and after the first game they are all eliminated and clearly nothing is working,” he added.

Meanwhile, Gold Stars chief executive officer Akwasi Adu has also disclosed that the promised GH₵1m payment to each Premier League club remains outstanding.
