Ghana was awarded the hosting rights in April 2026, with the competition scheduled for March 2027 as part of the country’s 70th Independence anniversary celebrations.

However, concerns over funding and the lack of visible infrastructure upgrades at the proposed venues have raised questions about Ghana’s readiness, with less than five months remaining before the tournament.

Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, Cape Coast Stadium and the University of Ghana Stadium have been earmarked for the competition, while the Accra Sports Stadium is also under consideration.

Morocco and Egypt have experience hosting major CAF competitions, making them potential alternatives should CAF decide to move the tournament from Ghana.

Egypt took over the hosting rights for the 2025 U-20 AFCON after Côte d’Ivoire withdrew less than a month before kick-off, demonstrating CAF’s willingness to appoint a replacement when the original host cannot proceed.

Côte d’Ivoire did not participate in the finals after withdrawing, while Egypt had already qualified on sporting merit.

A similar change involving Ghana would depend on CAF’s assessment of the country’s preparations and any subsequent decision on the hosting arrangement.

Ghana has yet to be stripped of the hosting rights, and no official confirmation has been established that Morocco or Egypt has been formally placed on standby.

With concerns mounting over stadium readiness and government funding, the coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether Ghana can meet its obligations and retain the tournament.
