CTA Reveals Why Real Madrid’s Star Didn’t Get Red Card in Sevilla Incident
According to a report by Madrid Universal published on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, the refereeing body believes the images are inconclusive regarding the nature of the contact between the Turkish international and Peque. The incident occurred during the first half, when the score was still goalless.
Sevilla reportedly felt Guler should have been sent off for an alleged elbow during the confrontation. However, the lack of clear visual evidence has made it difficult for the club’s complaints to result in further disciplinary action against the Real Madrid midfielder.
Sources at LaLiga indicated that 23 camera angles were used to broadcast the match. Despite the number of cameras available, the footage captured the incident only through wider views, including the rear camera, Skycam and the camera commonly used to assess offside situations.
None of these recordings offered a sufficiently close view to establish exactly how Guler made contact with Peque. Consequently, the production team could not provide a clearer image that would determine whether the midfielder struck his opponent with his elbow, shoulder or hand.
The report also clarified that the controversy did not arise from a broadcasting malfunction. The footage shown to television audiences was the same material available to the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) team, leaving officials without an alternative recording that could clarify the incident.
The CTA has explained that not every camera installed at a football stadium can provide useful evidence for VAR reviews. Incidents occurring away from the ball are particularly difficult to assess when the referee is unable to see the confrontation directly and the cameras are concentrating on other areas of play.
In Guler’s situation, the incident reportedly happened behind the referee, while the available cameras failed to capture the contact in sufficient detail.
As a result, the refereeing authorities maintain that there is no conclusive evidence to support retrospective punishment. Since the referee neither awarded a penalty nor showed Guler a red card during the match, further intervention would require stronger visual proof.
Guler is therefore expected to avoid disciplinary consequences despite Sevilla’s dissatisfaction following their 4-1 defeat against Real Madrid.
