Chiefs’ Kenneth Walker III joined Calvin Johnson company with another monster game to start KC career
It has been a great start to the season for Kansas City Chiefs running back Kenneth Walker III. There’s even a call for him to be at the top of the MVP voting. And Walker joined Calvin Johnson company in another monster game to start his Chiefs career, according to a post on X by Jordan Schultz.
“#Chiefs RB Kenneth Walker has joined Calvin Johnson (in 2011) as the only players since the 1970 merger to score 2+ TDs in four of their team’s first five games of a season. Walker has been a game-changer for Kansas City.”
In five games, Walker has 665 yards rushing with six touchdowns. He also has 14 catches for 95 yards and two more scores.
Walker’s new teammates have been impressed with the way he runs the football, according to The Athletic.
“The first guy never tackles him,” quarterback Patrick Mahomes said later with a smile, talking about Walker. “I know that (defender) isn’t going to get him.
“Obviously, having (No.) 9, it makes a difference both throwing and running.”
Right guard Trey Smith said, “He’s one of the best running backs I’ve ever played with, while head coach Andy Reid added, “He’s a stud.”
However, the Chiefs would like to be better in short-yardage situations. That was a concern last year, and it hasn’t been completely fixed with Walker this year, according to lancasteronline.com.
“Yeah, I think it’s just you’ve got to — whenever stuff’s not pretty — you’ve got to be able to just push it and get the first down,” Mahomes said. “I think that’s the biggest thing, and it’s not always going to be pretty. We have the short-yardage where we score a long touchdown, and then we have the short-yardage where we didn’t get there with the push and stuff like that, and so we’ll continue to work on it. I mean, guys take pride in that. They take pride in the entire run game.”
Walker said he feels like the Chiefs are making strides.
“We have a lot of stuff we have to execute and get better and more detailed at,” Walker said.
