Before, You Could Get Beans And Bread With ₦700 Now You need ₦3k For Bread And Beans -Agbonkhese

Sunday Agbonkhese, a bricklayer, has lamented the rising cost of food, saying he now needs up to ₦3,000 to buy bread and beans, yet the meal is still insufficient to satisfy his hunger.

In a report published by VANGUARD on Monday October 19, 2026, Agbonkhese said bread and cooked beans, popularly known as ewa agoyin, previously cost about ₦700 and were enough to make him full.

He explained that the same amount could hardly buy enough bread today, adding that he now eats only twice a day to save some money from his already meagre earnings.

Agbonkhese further lamented that despite spending more on food, he receives smaller portions than he did a few years ago, making it increasingly difficult to afford meals that can adequately satisfy his hunger.

In his words, “Before, you could get cooked beans (ewa agoyin) and bread with N700 and be full. But now, N700 can hardly get you a loaf of bread. To get full, you now need up to N3,000 for bread and beans. I eat twice a day to save a little from my earnings which is also little. It is only God that is feeding me.”
