Atta Mills’ Son Speaks After Visiting Rawlings Residence

Kofi Atta-Mills, the son of Ghana’s late former President John Evans Atta Mills, has drawn attention after responding to a journalist while leaving the residence of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings and his family.

Atta-Mills had reportedly visited the Rawlings residence to commiserate with the family following the death of former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings. His visit was described as a courtesy call to express sympathy to the bereaved family during a difficult period.

While departing the residence, a journalist approached him for a comment. In response, Atta-Mills said, “It’s not my funeral, so please,” before adding that the late former First Lady was a good woman.

His brief response appeared to signal that he did not wish to make extensive remarks about the occasion. Nevertheless, his description of Nana Konadu as a good woman offered a personal expression of respect for the former First Lady.

Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings was the wife of Ghana’s former President Jerry John Rawlings, who led the country during different periods before becoming its democratically elected president under the Fourth Republic. She was also a prominent public figure in her own right, particularly through her involvement in women’s empowerment and political activities.

As a former First Lady, she played a visible role in national affairs and became associated with initiatives aimed at improving the lives of women and children. Her public life and long-standing involvement in Ghanaian politics made her a recognised figure beyond her family.

Kofi Atta-Mills is the son of John Evans Atta Mills, who served as Ghana’s president from 2009 until his death in July 2012. His visit to the Rawlings family brought together two families closely associated with Ghana’s political history.

The encounter also highlighted the personal expressions of sympathy that often accompany the passing of prominent national figures. During such periods, visits from relatives, public officials and other well-wishers provide opportunities to offer condolences and acknowledge the contributions of the deceased.

Although Atta-Mills kept his response brief, his visit and his description of Nana Konadu as a good woman conveyed his condolences to the family. His remarks came as mourners and well-wishers continued to pay their respects to the late former First Lady.
