André Dede Ayew Confirms Calls from Football Stakeholders Over Possible GFA Presidency Bid

Former Black Stars captain André Dede Ayew has confirmed receiving calls from football stakeholders encouraging him to consider contesting the presidency of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), amid growing discussions about the future leadership of Ghanaian football.

Ayew made the disclosure during an appearance on the Obi One Podcast, hosted by former Nigeria international and Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel. However, he stressed that he has not formally declared his intention to contest the position, insisting that his immediate priority is finding ways to improve football in Ghana.

According to a report by the former Ghana captain acknowledged that the rumours surrounding a possible presidential bid had prompted calls from people within the football community.

Ayew, who has represented Ghana for approximately 17 years, said the focus should remain on addressing the challenges facing the sport rather than allowing speculation about future leadership to dominate discussions.

He maintained that those currently in charge of Ghanaian football must begin implementing reforms immediately instead of postponing action until a new administration takes over.

The former Olympique Marseille, West Ham United and Swansea City forward has also highlighted the importance of infrastructure, proper planning and responsible management of financial resources in developing the domestic game.

Ayew believes that investors would be more willing to support Ghanaian football if stakeholders could demonstrate that available resources were being used effectively. He has also called for stronger cooperation between the government, the GFA and other relevant institutions to establish a clear development strategy.

His comments come amid public debate about the performance of Ghana’s national teams and the administration of football in the country. Some supporters have called for changes in GFA leadership, while others have urged reforms focused on grassroots development, infrastructure and youth football.

Former Nigerian international John Obi Mikel has publicly backed Ayew for the GFA presidency and said he would campaign for him.

Despite the growing calls, Ayew has not confirmed whether he will enter the race when the next GFA presidential election approaches.

For now, the former Black Stars captain says improving Ghanaian football should take precedence over discussions about who will eventually lead the association.
