You Cannot Have A Stable Economy When The People Are Suffering Things Are Not Going Well By Bawumia
NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has criticised the government’s economic management, arguing that claims of stability mean little when ordinary Ghanaians continue to suffer.Dunkwa TV / PointOne News graphic (18 October 2026); Dr Bawumia’s speech reported by 3News, MyJoyOnline and GhanaWeb.
Speaking at the NPP’s National Thanksgiving Service in Sunyani on 18 October 2026, Bawumia said: “You cannot have a stable economy when the people are suffering. Things are not going well in Ghana.
He acknowledged government reports of lower inflation and a stronger cedi but insisted these indicators have not translated into better living conditions for citizens.
“As you can all attest, things are not going well. Things are really hard for the people. And when you ask them what they have done, they will tell you that inflation is down and the dollar is down. The reason we all want inflation and the dollar to go down is because we want it to have a positive impact and make life and the cost of living easier. But if inflation and the dollar go down and the people are suffering, is that how we want it?” he asked.
Bawumia described Ghana as having two economies: a “paper economy” of official statistics and a “pocket economy” of high living costs and daily hardship. He said the latter is what matters most to the people.
He listed groups he said have been disappointed, including cocoa, cashew, soybean, rice and maize farmers, as well as teachers, nurses, doctors and traders. He also questioned the delivery of the 24-hour economy policy, describing it as unfulfilled campaign rhetoric.
According to the former Vice President, economic stability is meaningless unless it improves the lives of citizens and puts money in their pockets. Electricity, water, fuel and transport costs remain high, he noted, while traders complain of low sales.
The speech forms part of the NPP’s continuing critique of the NDC government’s performance less than two years into its term. The ruling party maintains that it is stabilising the economy and implementing policies to ease the burden on Ghanaians.
