Wike Leads 23 Rivers Council Chairmen, Lawmakers to Fresh Meeting With Fubara
According to a report that was published by TheCable on Monday, October 19, 2026, Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has led members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and all 23 local government chairmen to a new meeting with Governor Siminalayi Fubara. This meeting is taking place as efforts to maintain reconciliation between their respective political camps continue.
It had been less than two weeks since representatives of both camps had gathered at the same location for discussions aimed at resolving their protracted political differences when the meeting took place at Fubara’s private residence in Port Harcourt.
Among the individuals who accompanied Wike to the meeting were Martin Amaewhule, who serves as the speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, and Kingsley Chinda, who is running for governor of the state as a candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Following the political feud between Wike and Fubara, which caused the political leadership of the state to be divided and strained relations between the governor and lawmakers, the most recent engagement is a part of the efforts to consolidate the reconciliation process.
Wike had recently made an announcement that the disagreement had come to an end. He claimed that Fubara had consented to return to the political family that had supported his rise to the position of governor.
In the wake of the announcement, a reconciliation committee was established with the purpose of engaging Fubara and his supporters. Magnus Abe, who is the chairman of the Rainbow Coalition reconciliation committee, was charged with leading the committee.
Chinda was subsequently endorsed by Fubara as his preferred candidate for the position of governor in the 2027 election. Fubara had previously declared his support for the Rainbow Coalition.
The governor had initially been screened alongside Chinda in advance of the APC governorship primary, but he later withdrew from the race, explaining that his decision was intended to promote peace and unity in Rivers State. Chinda had been screened alongside the prospective governor. After that, Chinda became the only candidate for the party’s nomination for governor in the election.
The political crisis that began shortly after Fubara took office in 2023 is the impetus for the reconciliation efforts that are currently underway. The disagreement became so heated that it led to a confrontation between the governor and the lawmakers, which ultimately led to a significant rift appearing within the state assembly.
In the midst of the political disagreement, a fire occurred in October 2023, which caused damage to a portion of the assembly complex. This caused tensions to rise. Following that, lawmakers who were loyal to Wike initiated impeachment proceedings against Fubara, which further exacerbated the negative relationship that existed between the legislative and executive branches of government.
In March of 2025, on account of the crisis, President Bola Tinubu ultimately decided to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State that would last for a period of six months. As a result of the declaration, Fubara, his deputy, and members of the state assembly were all placed on administrative leave. After the emergency that had been in place was lifted, the elected officials eventually went back to their positions.
