Terrified passengers began filming American Airlines emergency landing after noticing issues with its thrust before oxygen masks dropped from ceiling

Passengers aboard an American Airlines flight described what they thought were their last moments after oxygen masks dropped from the ceiling as their flight was forced to make an emergency landing.
American Airlines Flight 5089 from St. Louis to Philadelphia on Saturday was delayed for two hours before being cleared for takeoff, according to KSDK.
Olivia Clancy was aboard the flight with her family when she immediately noticed that something was seriously wrong.
‘You could tell right away after we took off that the plane was having problems with its thrust, I guess,’ Clancy told the outlet.
‘I looked at my husband and said, “This is not normal.” Then, out came the airbags.’
As the plane struggled to maintain altitude, she rushed to secure the oxygen masks on her two children.
Tessa and Mark Springer were on the same flight, telling the outlet they had never experienced such terror.
‘I never want to experience it again,’ said Tessa. ‘I just thought our kids were going to lose both their parents today.’
The couple said they smelled fire on the plane and sent their children what they thought would be their final goodbye.
‘Problem on our plane, we love you guys,’ read one of the messages they sent.
‘It felt like that plane was going to go down because of the smoke and the way that the flight crew was behaving,’ Mark said.
Air traffic control audio obtained by NBC News revealed the pilot asked for ‘fire equipment’ to be brought to the tarmac as they reported the need for an emergency landing.
‘We have fumes in the cockpit, we need to expedite,’ a pilot can be heard saying.
The plane was able to turn around and return to St. Louis Lambert International Airport, where first responders were waiting.
Clancy recorded the intense moment crew members screamed for passengers to evacuate the plane.
‘Release seatbelts!’ screamed a crew member. ‘Get out! Leave belongings!’
The unbuckling of seatbelts and blaring of alarms can be heard adding to the chaos in the video.
American Airlines shared the following statement with NBC News about the incident: ‘American Eagle Flight 5089, operated by PSA Airlines, returned to St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL) shortly after takeoff after a reported odor.
‘The aircraft landed safely at STL and was taken out of service to be inspected by our maintenance team. We apologize to our customers for their experience and thank our team members for their professionalism.’
The passengers told the outlet they felt the evacuation was mismanaged by both American Airlines and St. Louis Lambert International Airport after passengers were left wandering on the tarmac without direction.
Clancy added that the airline’s attempt to rectify the situation was another ‘slap in the face.’
‘I got an email from American Airlines that said, “We’re so sorry about your flight, here are four $12 food vouchers that you can use for your party at the airport if you choose to stay.” (It felt like) a slap in the face,’ Clancy said.
