Printing Cedis Locally Could Cost Ghana More, Bank of Ghana Official Explains

The Bank of Ghana has highlighted the financial challenges associated with producing the country’s banknotes locally, explaining that establishing and operating a domestic currency-printing facility could cost more than relying on external printing services.

Dominic Owusu, Director of Currency Management at the Bank of Ghana, explained that printing Ghanaian cedi notes locally would require substantial investment in specialised machinery and other essential infrastructure.

According to him, the high-capacity equipment needed for currency production becomes economically viable only when a country prints billions of banknotes annually. Ghana’s current demand for banknotes, however, is reportedly below the level required to make such an investment financially worthwhile.

The explanation suggests that setting up a local currency-printing facility would involve more than purchasing printing machines. The country would also need to consider the costs of maintaining the equipment, operating the facility and ensuring that banknotes meet strict security and quality standards.

For Ghana, the central issue is whether the volume of currency required each year would justify the enormous initial investment and ongoing operational expenses.

Although printing cedis locally may appear to be a way of strengthening domestic production and reducing reliance on foreign currency printers, the financial implications remain an important consideration.

The comments have drawn attention to the economic factors that influence decisions about currency production, particularly the balance between national self-reliance and cost efficiency.

Ultimately, the Bank of Ghana’s explanation highlights the importance of evaluating the long-term financial benefits before committing public resources to a local banknote-printing facility.
