Open Rebellion Erupts as Senior ODM Generals Sever Ties with Odinga Family

An unprecedented, high-voltage political war has erupted within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) as the powerful family of the late Opposition titan Raila Odinga locks horns with senior party stalwarts and cabinet figures in a bitter struggle for regional dominance ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The deepening rift—which exploded into full public view following the first anniversary commemoration of Raila’s passing—signals a historic, seismic shift in Luo Nyanza’s political landscape as senior government-aligned party leaders openly defy the family’s traditional influence.

The tension escalated dramatically after National Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, flanked by senior government-aligned ODM leaders, launched a scathing attack against the Odinga family, openly accusing them of “contempt” and “disrespect” toward elected and appointed leaders in the region.

Mbadi bluntly declared that the era of automatic political inheritance in Nyanza had officially drawn to a close, asserting that loyalty to the late opposition icon cannot be forcefully transferred to his surviving kin.

“The Luo community loved Baba dearly, but that love and loyalty cannot automatically be transferred… You cannot dictate our political future or force a political path on us. The Luo Nation has its own voice and its own choices,” Mbadi declared, promising a total political restructuring in Nyanza post-2027.

In response, Mama Ida Odinga appealed for emotional restraint and dignity, warning political actors against converting her late husband’s legacy into a battleground for selfish electoral ambitions or personal score-settling. However, the ideological divide continues to widen rapidly.

While party leaders aligned with President William Ruto’s broad-based administration accuse the family of pushing regional leaders away, ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna and the Linda Mwananchi movement have come to the family’s defense, accusing Mbadi, Junet Mohamed, and government insiders of committing ultimate betrayal by forsaking Raila’s core principles to secure executive favors.

With the United Opposition actively holding secret talks with the Odinga family—and figures like Winnie Odinga and Raila Jr. aligning with anti-establishment youth movements—the battle for control over ODM’s political machinery has escalated into an explosive, high-stakes showdown that promises to redefine party politics and reshape election alignments ahead of 2027.
