Madam Inspector ending explained: Who killed the brides with poisoned sweets and what is Chitra’s husband’s secret mission?
Madam Inspector ending explained: Netflix's Madam Inspector ends with a disturbing revelation about a serial killer whose hatred of women comes from a childhood tragedy. Released on 17 October 2026, the seven episode crime thriller stars Sandipta Sen as Sub Inspector Chitra Basu and Niranjan Mondal as Chirayu Talukdar.
Originally released in Bengali as Birangana on Hoichoi in 2025, the series follows Chitra as she investigates the mysterious deaths of divorced women preparing to marry again. What begins as a series of suspected suicides turns into a chilling murder investigation involving poisoned sweets, a killer in disguise and a secret that changes everything.
Chirayu Talukdar, played by Niranjan Mondal, is the killer behind the mysterious bride deaths. He runs a flower business called Golden Petals, which allows him to visit wedding venues without attracting much suspicion. Chitra begins connecting the deaths after Falguni is found dead on her wedding night and discovers similarities with the earlier death of Tania.
Her superiors initially dismiss her suspicions, but Chitra refuses to accept the deaths as suicides. The investigation eventually focuses on divorced women who are preparing to marry again and have children from their previous relationships. Chirayu's connection to several weddings makes him a suspect, although the police initially lack enough evidence to arrest him.
Chirayu disguises himself as an elderly woman and approaches the victims' children near their schools. He befriends them, asks about their mothers' favourite colours and gives them sweets to pass on as gifts. The children have no idea that the candies are poisoned.
This method allows Chirayu to exploit the trust between mothers and their children. The sweets reach the women through people they love, making the killer difficult to identify. The children's descriptions eventually help the police understand the disguise, but a mistaken identification gives Chirayu an opportunity to escape. He then kidnaps Mitra, Chitra's elder sister, who is preparing to marry Shubhankar. With Mitra in danger, Chitra must find her before Chirayu carries out another murder.
Chirayu's motive comes from a traumatic childhood. His father was abusive and threatened his family when his mother tried to leave him. She eventually sought police assistance so she could escape with her children, but before she could return, her husband poisoned himself and the children.
Chirayu survived, but his brother died. He was sent to an orphanage and grew up believing that his mother had abandoned them. That belief shaped his hatred of women who leave their marriages, particularly those who begin new relationships while raising children. As an adult, he convinces himself that women who remarry are betraying their children. He projects his anger towards his mother onto innocent women who are simply trying to rebuild their lives. His childhood helps explain his twisted thinking, but it does not justify the murders.
One of the finale's most important revelations is that Chirayu's mother never stopped caring about him. She had left an abusive marriage to protect herself and intended to rescue her children, rather than abandon them.
Even after Chirayu was placed in an orphanage, she continued supporting him from a distance. She gave Tania money to help care for him, helped him establish his flower business and arranged for his landlord to provide him with food. Chirayu had spent years blaming the wrong person for his family's tragedy. His father's abuse and actions were responsible for the family's suffering, while his mother's departure was an attempt to escape that violence.
Chitra sets a trap using a fake wedding arranged through Shubhankar, hoping to expose Chirayu. However, the plan takes a dangerous turn when Chirayu kidnaps Mitra and takes her to his old family home. She eventually reaches the house with Chirayu's mother. She challenges his beliefs by explaining that his mother did not abandon him and that his father was responsible for the family tragedy. Chitra also draws on her own childhood experiences to show that a failed marriage does not automatically make someone a bad parent. In the emotional confrontation, Chirayu asks his mother whether she remembers his favourite colour. He recalls the shirts she bought him during Durga Puja and asks her to feed him a coloured candy. Before he can eat it, the police arrive and take him away.
Chirayu cries out to his mother as he is led away, revealing the frightened child beneath his violent behaviour. His arrest brings the murder investigation to a close, although his emotional breakdown cannot undo the harm he has caused.
After solving the case, Chitra learns that her senior officer has recommended her for a promotion and a posting at headquarters. It is a significant victory for an officer whose instincts were repeatedly dismissed during the investigation. However, the final scene introduces another mystery. Chitra's husband returns a lunchbox she has left behind and subsequently receives a phone call from someone asking about Chitra's promotion and their mission. He says the mission will continue and that he will handle everything.
The caller warns that both he and Chitra could be in danger if the mission fails. The series does not reveal the caller's identity or explain the mission, leaving the audience with unanswered questions about Chitra's husband and his hidden activities.
The ending brings together the series' central themes of childhood trauma, misogyny and the consequences of prejudice. Chirayu's past explains how he developed his resentment, but his decision to punish women for his own family's tragedy makes him responsible for his crimes.
His mother's story challenges the belief that leaving a marriage means abandoning one's children. Chitra's success also exposes the gender bias she faces within the police force, proving that persistence matters when those in authority refuse to listen. Chirayu is arrested and Chitra's career moves forward, but the final phone call prevents the story from ending on a completely settled note. The murder case is closed, while the mystery surrounding Chitra's husband remains unresolved.
Madam Inspector is available on Netflix. The series has seven episodes and features Hindi audio, with Tamil and Telugu audio options and English subtitles listed on Netflix. The original Bengali series, Birangana, is available on Hoichoi.
