Astrid Stawiarz | Getty Images Share on Twitter Share on Facebook Share on Pocket Lidl US is recalling one lot of Gelatelli Coffee & Vanilla Gelato with Coffee Sauce & Cookie Pieces after routine quality testing found Listeria monocytogenes in a lab sample, according to the company’s notice posted Oct. 17 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. No illnesses have been reported.

The gelato was sold in 1-pint (16-fluid-ounce) containers at all Lidl US stores in Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., between July 19 and Oct. 15.

Frozen desserts can sit in the freezer for months, so a pint bought in August may still be there. That matters because freezing does not kill or reduce Listeria, according to the FDA.

The recall covers only one lot. The container has a clear plastic body and a brown lid. Check the bottom for lot code 085261 and a best-by date of MAR/26/2028. The UPC is 4 0564897 22458.

Customers should throw the gelato away or return it to any Lidl store for a full refund. No receipt is needed. Questions can go to the Lidl US Customer Care Hotline at 844-747-5435, Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern time.

If the container is gone and you are unsure which lot you had, the safest choice is to throw out any remaining gelato, especially if someone in the household is at high risk.

Many shoppers toss packaging before a recall is announced, which makes it harder to match a product to a lot. MedicalDaily has reported on how discarded packaging leaves shoppers unable to verify lots in frozen food recalls.

Lidl’s notice says Listeria “can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.” It also notes that infection “can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”

The CDC lists pregnant women, newborns, and adults 65 and older among those at highest risk, along with people whose immune systems are weakened by conditions such as cancer, diabetes, or liver or kidney disease, or by treatments such as chemotherapy or steroids.

Listeria can cause two kinds of illness. An intestinal illness brings diarrhea and vomiting, usually starting within 24 hours and lasting one to three days. A more serious invasive illness, which spreads beyond the gut, can cause fever, muscle aches, and fatigue, as well as headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or seizures. In pregnancy, the illness may feel like a mild flu.

Symptoms of invasive illness usually start within two weeks, according to the CDC. FoodSafety.gov notes that the incubation period can be as long as 70 days, so people at high risk who ate the gelato should stay alert for several weeks.

Check the freezer. If you find the recalled lot, do not eat it, and keep it where children cannot reach it.

Clean surfaces the product touched. Wash freezer shelves, scoops, and nearby containers with hot, soapy water, then rinse and dry. MedicalDaily’s guide to cleaning a refrigerator after a recall explains how Listeria can persist in cold appliances. Wash your hands after handling the container.

Anyone who ate the gelato and develops fever or flu-like symptoms should call a health care provider and mention the possible Listeria exposure. Pregnant people should contact their provider promptly, even if symptoms are mild. Seek urgent care for a high fever with a stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or seizures.

The notice does not say how many pints were sold, and the FDA posting does not list any other Gelatelli flavors as affected.
