James Orengo Sends Warning to ODM Leaders Attacking Mama Ida Odinga
Governor James Orengo has accused unnamed individuals within ODM of selling out the party and now trying to erase the legacy of the late Raila Odinga, as he condemned what he termed coordinated attacks on Ida Odinga.
Orengo, one of the party’s most prominent figures, made the remarks in a statement on Monday, October 19, 2026. He said he was “shocked and extremely disturbed by the coordinated and mobilized attacks” against Canon Ida Odinga, pointing to the nature and scale of the assault on her character and reputation.
The governor insisted that Mrs Odinga’s place in Kenya’s political history stretches well beyond her marriage to the former Prime Minister.
According to him, she was “a fighter in the struggle against oppression, injustice and despotism,” and the attacks against her insult that record.
Orengo directed his sharpest words at those he described as mercenaries in the party. He said the vitriol and propaganda aimed at the Odinga family amounts to treachery and betrayal, adding that the individuals behind it have sold ODM and now want to throw Raila’s legacy into the dustbin of history. He declared that this would never happen.
The governor further claimed the hostile language being used against the family had been quietly surfacing even while Raila was still alive, suggesting the hostility is not new but was previously kept in check.
Orengo closed his statement with a Luo proverb, “Wang’ mi chiedho ema gawi,” which he rendered in Swahili as “Asante ya punda ni mateke.” The saying was a pointed rebuke aimed at those he holds responsible for the attacks.
