Jail Them When You Come To Power, We Don’t Care – Nana Ama Agyarko Fires Afenyo-Markin

Nana Ama Agyarko, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has called on Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to stop criticising the Mahama administration’s efforts to investigate alleged corruption and focus instead on the need for accountability.

Agyarko made the remarks in response to Afenyo-Markin’s objections to Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL) and other government investigations. He has described the initiatives as politically driven, alleging that they are intended to persecute NPP members and former officials.

Afenyo-Markin has also criticised what he calls a “Rambo style” approach to accountability, arguing that the government is using investigations to target political opponents.

Agyarko rejected this line of argument, insisting that the public is more concerned about whether allegations of financial misconduct are investigated fairly and whether those found responsible face the consequences.

She said the NPP should not be seen as resisting accountability, especially amid concerns about alleged corruption, questionable spending, and financial irregularities raised in Auditor-General’s reports.

Her comments come at a time when the Attorney General is pursuing cases involving former public officials accused of causing financial losses to the state. Some of the actions reportedly include applications to freeze assets and requests for strict bail conditions.

Although Afenyo-Markin has warned that the NDC risks losing public confidence through what he considers selective justice, Agyarko emphasised that the focus should remain on the evidence and recovery of public funds.

She maintained that individuals accused of misusing state resources must be prepared to respond to the allegations where supporting evidence exists. For her, accountability and the recovery of public money should outweigh political loyalty or sympathy for those under investigation.
