I’ve Set A Clear Goal That By 2030, Raw Minerals Ore Should No Longer Leave Our Shores – Mahama

According to a report by GTV Ghana today being Monday, October 19, 2026, President John Dramani Mahama has stated that Ghana is working towards ending the export of raw mineral ores by 2030, stressing the need for the country to process more of its mineral resources locally before they are exported to international markets.

The President made the declaration in connection with the Mining in Motion Summit 2026, where discussions are focused on the future of mining and mineral resource management.

According to Mahama, his administration has established a clear target to ensure that raw minerals are no longer shipped out of the country without undergoing the necessary processing.

The proposed goal reflects a broader push to increase the value Ghana obtains from its natural resources. Rather than exporting minerals in their unprocessed form, the country aims to strengthen local processing and create more opportunities for industries that can transform raw materials into finished or semi-finished products.

Mahama’s position also highlights the importance of developing local industries capable of supporting mineral processing.

Achieving the 2030 target would require investment in processing facilities, reliable infrastructure, technology and the skills needed to operate within a more developed mineral value chain.

The move could also create opportunities for employment and encourage greater participation by Ghanaian businesses in activities linked to the mining sector. By processing more minerals domestically, Ghana would seek to retain a larger share of the economic benefits generated by its natural resources.

However, meeting the deadline would depend on the country’s ability to address the practical and financial challenges associated with local mineral processing.

The President’s declaration at the Mining in Motion Summit 2026 therefore places 2030 as an important milestone in Ghana’s ambition to move beyond exporting raw minerals and strengthen the country’s position in the global mineral industry.
