In Defence Of The Defenders: Honouring Atta Akyea, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, And Enock Afoakwa

According to recent reports, In Ghana’s polarized political climate, legal practitioners Hon. Samuel Atta Akyea, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, and Enock Afoakwa deserve recognition for defending New Patriotic Party (NPP) members facing state legal actions. Their efforts go beyond political alignment, reinforcing the constitutional principle that everyone merits a fair trial, competent representation, and due process.

Former MP Samuel Atta Akyea has consistently defended prominent figures, including Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi). He criticized what he termed an “ambulance justice system,” warning against state convenience overriding due process and insisting that political cases require patience and legal rigor.

Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, MP for Manhyia South and a lawyer, exemplified legal compliance by presenting himself to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) alongside counsel.

His experience highlights that respecting legal authority does not mean waiving fundamental rights, emphasizing that political affiliation should neither place someone above the law nor deny them its protections.

Similarly, Enock Afoakwa has championed legal support for grassroots activists and key party figures. By scrutinizing police procedures and challenging prosecution claims, his work ensures that state authority remains subject to credible evidence rather than unchecked power.

Ultimately, the protections these lawyers advocate for—the presumption of innocence, access to counsel, and fair hearings—safeguard all Ghanaians, regardless of party lines. In honoring Atta Akyea, Baffour Awuah, and Afoakwa, we celebrate a essential democratic foundation: ensuring that government authority remains strictly accountable to the rule of law.
