How To Survive A Heart Attack If You Are Alone And What You Should Avoid
A heart attack can happen at home, at work or even while someone is resting. It occurs when blood flow to part of the heart muscle becomes blocked, preventing it from receiving enough oxygen. Without prompt treatment, the condition can cause serious damage or death.
The frightening part is that a person may experience a heart attack while alone. Knowing how to recognise the warning signs and respond quickly can make a difference.
A heart attack does not always begin with sudden, severe chest pain. Warning signs may include pressure or discomfort in the chest, pain spreading to the arm, back, neck or jaw, shortness of breath, cold sweating, nausea or lightheadedness.
Some people, including women and people with diabetes, may experience less typical symptoms. Do not dismiss unusual symptoms simply because they do not match what you have seen in films.
If you suspect a heart attack, call your local emergency number immediately. In Nigeria, you can try the national emergency number, 112, or contact a local ambulance service.
Explain your symptoms and location clearly, and follow the dispatcher’s instructions. Do not wait to see whether the pain disappears before seeking help.
Stop walking, exercising or performing strenuous activities. Sit in a comfortable, supported position while waiting for help.
Avoid unnecessary movement and keep your phone close to you. If possible, contact a trusted neighbour or nearby person who can assist while emergency help is on the way.
4. Consider Aspirin Only When Appropriate
First-aid guidelines indicate that an alert adult with suspected heart-attack symptoms may chew and swallow aspirin while awaiting emergency assistance, provided they are not allergic to it and have not been advised by a healthcare professional to avoid it.
If you are unsure whether aspirin is safe for you, wait for the emergency professional’s instructions. Never delay calling for help while searching for medication.
5. Make It Easier for Rescuers to Reach You
If you are alone at home and can do so safely, tell someone how to access your location. You may unlock the door if it is safe and does not require you to exert yourself.
Keep the emergency call connected and follow any instructions you receive. Do not put yourself at risk by attempting unnecessary tasks.
6. Know What to Do If You Lose Consciousness
If another person becomes unresponsive and is not breathing normally, emergency services should be called immediately, and CPR should begin according to the dispatcher’s instructions. An automated external defibrillator (AED) should be used if available.
A person who loses consciousness cannot reliably perform these steps themselves, which is why calling for help as soon as symptoms begin is so important.
Things You Should Avoid During a Suspected Heart Attack
Do not drive yourself to the hospital. Your condition could worsen suddenly, putting you and other road users at risk.
Do not ignore symptoms that come and go. Temporary improvement does not rule out a heart attack.
Do not rely on coughing forcefully to stop a heart attack. The so-called “cough CPR” method is not a reliable substitute for emergency medical care.
Do not take unprescribed medicines or home remedies instead of seeking help. These can waste valuable time and may be unsafe.
A heart attack is a medical emergency, and early treatment can save lives. Recognising the warning signs, calling emergency services immediately and following professional instructions are the most important steps to take when you are alone.
