How Flashy Nairobi Gangster Wakinyonga Stole Millions Helped the Poor and Met His Death in Kangemi
The legendary tale of Peter Mwea Wakinyonga remains etched in the hearts of many Kenyans decades after his dramatic downfall. Back in the 1970s, this flashy gangster turned daylight bank robberies into a spectacle, pulling off high-profile jobs across Nairobi and Thika.
Born in Kangema, Murangβa, Wakinyonga settled in Kangemi and quickly gained notoriety. He targeted busy spots like Wabera Street and Thika, stealing massive amounts of cash and leaving authorities scrambling for answers.
Despite his criminal life, he played the role of a local hero in Kangemi. He generously paid school fees, cleared debts, and bought rounds of drinks for locals at Nyakiambi Lodge, earning deep protection from the community.
Fear and tension gripped the city, especially after the fatal shooting of Total Kenya boss Stephen Bloch at Valley Arcade. The government placed a heavy KSh 100,000 bounty on his head to end his reign.
That gripping era finally closed on June 26, 1978. Following a tip-off, fierce cop Patrick Shaw tracked Wakinyonga to a Kangemi bar, where a deadly shootout left the notorious robber dead.
