The 55-year-old actor made the remark Friday on The Drew Barrymore Show, where he and the 51-year-old host joked about missed chances from their younger days in the entertainment industry.
Both stars grew up in the spotlight. Barrymore became famous as a child in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Hawke made his film debut as a teenager in Explorers. Hawke said Barrymore had been part of his life for as long as he could recall. The news follows Katie Zacharia shares two-word response to former Press Secretary’s praise.

"I can't remember a time in my life when I was not aware of you," he said.
"That's how I feel about you!" Barrymore replied. Hawke then turned the conversation to romance. "What I can't believe is that we never dated, you know? I mean…" he said.
Barrymore answered with mock frustration.
"Where were you?" she asked. "And by the way, what me and every other girl on the planet wouldn't have given to date you. Where the hell were you?"
Hawke said he had hoped to run into her on the party circuit years ago.
"There was a many a night, where I went like — this would be circa the '90s, I would be going to a party and I'd think, 'Maybe Drew will be there,'" he said.
When asked why he never just called her, Hawke said he had been waiting for fate to step in.
"I wanted to play it cool. I wanted it to happen organically. I thought, you know, something magic would happen," he said. "And look what happened — nothing!" Barrymore said.
"We're meeting on a talk show," Hawke replied. Both actors have since built family lives with other partners.
Hawke has been married to Ryan Shawhughes since 2008.
She had once worked as a nanny for the children he shares with his first wife, actor Uma Thurman, though the two were not romantically involved at that time.
They reconnected about a year after his divorce from Thurman, began dating and later married. The couple has two daughters, Clementine and Indiana.
Hawke and Thurman are also the parents of daughter Maya Hawke, an actor, and son Levon Roan Thurman-Hawke.
Barrymore has been married three times. Her first marriage was to bar owner Jeremy Thomas, and her second was to comedian Tom Green.
She later married Will Kopelman, with whom she has two daughters, Olive and Frankie. Barrymore and Kopelman divorced in 2016.
