Embracing Simplicity: Aliko Dangote Says He Can Sleep in Any Hotel, No Matter How Bad
Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has urged Nigerians to embrace humility and simplicity, saying wealth should not make anyone feel superior to others.
According to a report by Punch News on October 19, 2026. Dangote made the remarks on Monday at an event tagged Vision 2030, where he spoke about his lifestyle, his relationship with young people, and the responsibility of older generations to share their experiences.
The billionaire industrialist said he could stay in even the poorest accommodation despite his financial status, stressing that material possessions should not determine how people treat others.
“Today, if you take me to anywhere, if you take me to the worst hotel, I can sleep, I can have my shower, I can live,” he said.
He added that people should remain grounded regardless of their achievements, noting that anyone’s circumstances could change.
“And also to show people that, look, in life, you have to be as simple as you can, because anybody can be anybody,” Dangote stated.
To illustrate his point, the businessman recounted an encounter with the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, whom he said had served for eight years without using a driver.
Dangote said he asked the Ethiopian leader about the arrangement during a visit to the country for the launch of a fertiliser plant.
According to him, the prime minister explained that his wife drove him around.
The comments came after content creator Adebayo Ridwan, popularly known as Bae U Barbie, invited Dangote to appear on his YouTube programme, Curiosity Made Me Ask.
Bae U said younger Nigerians were interested in hearing from prominent business figures but did not always have access to their interviews because many appeared on platforms that attracted older audiences.
He also mentioned public interest in Dangote’s business activities and its planned initial public offering as reasons younger people wanted to hear directly from him.
Responding to the invitation, Dangote said young Nigerians represented the country’s future and deserved opportunities to learn from the experiences of successful people.
“Honestly, the future that we have is actually you, the youth. We, our own generation, really, we have not really done very well for Nigeria and also for Africa. That’s the truth,” he said.
He maintained that older Nigerians needed to sit with younger people and discuss lessons from their lives and careers.
Dangote also explained why he readily agrees to take photographs with members of the public, despite his position as a billionaire.
He recalled that when he was younger, he and his late grandfather met prominent personalities in Washington and requested photographs with them.
The experience, he said, shaped his decision to honour similar requests from people who approach him, as he understands the excitement of meeting someone they admire.
His remarks centred on humility, accessibility and the need for successful Nigerians to engage with younger generations.
