Elon Musk Pledges SpaceX Share for Every American Child Next Year in Potential $10.5 Billion Giveaway
Elon Musk has announced plans to give one share of his SpaceX company to every child in America next year, a proposed giveaway that could be worth more than $10.5 billion if it covers all children under the age of 18.
The billionaire entrepreneur made the announcement in a post on X on October 19, 2026, writing: “Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America. This will be the first of many.”
The announcement has drawn attention because of the potential scale of the proposed gift. According to Axios, the United States has just over 72 million people under the age of 18. At a reported closing price of $146.03 per share on Friday, October 16, distributing one share to each of them would represent a total market value of approximately $10.5 billion.
However, the figure is an estimate rather than a confirmed cost. Musk has not clarified whether his promise covers every child living in the United States or only American citizens. He has also not specified the age limits, eligibility requirements or process through which the shares would be distributed.
It is therefore not yet clear whether the children would receive shares directly, hold them through custodial investment accounts managed by adults, or benefit through another arrangement. Musk has also not explained what he meant by describing the giveaway as the “first of many.”
The announcement comes amid wider discussions about how technology companies and their founders can share their wealth with the public. Axios reported that Musk had made the statement after responding to news that AI company Anthropic was establishing a public benefit fund backed by 5% of its equity. Musk had argued that shares should be distributed directly to the public, adding that he intended to follow that approach.
There is also an existing initiative involving SpaceX shares. According to Axios, SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell previously pledged shares for two million Trump Accounts, a programme designed to provide investment accounts for eligible children in the United States.
If implemented as announced, Musk’s proposal could give millions of children a financial interest in one of the world’s major space and technology businesses. However, receiving a company share is not the same as receiving cash. The value of an investment can rise or fall, and the eventual benefit would depend on the company’s performance and the conditions attached to the distribution.
For families, the practical questions remain how the shares would be transferred, who would manage investments belonging to younger children and when beneficiaries would be able to sell or otherwise access them.
For now, Musk’s post represents a public pledge rather than a completed giveaway. The next important development will be whether he provides a formal plan explaining who qualifies, how the shares will be distributed and when the process will begin.
