‘Economic stability is meaningless if Ghanaians are still suffering’ – Bawumia tells Mahama

Dr Bawumia argued that economic stability is meaningless if it does not translate into improved living conditions.

Speaking at the party’s Thanksgiving Service in Sunyani, Dr Bawumia drew on Ghana’s founding President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s famous statement about liberation, to question the benefits of the country’s economic indicators when citizens continue to struggle.

“Stability of the economy is meaningless if it cannot be linked up with the total liberation of the suffering of our people,” he stated.

According to Dr Bawumia, although the government points to declining inflation and a fall in the value of the dollar against the cedi as evidence of economic progress, these developments must ultimately benefit ordinary Ghanaians.

“If you look at how things are going today, we all know things are not going well. Today, if you ask the government what they have done, they will tell you they have brought down inflation and the dollar has come down,” he said.

Dr Bawumia further questioned the significance of these economic gains if citizens continue to experience financial hardship.

“The reason why we want inflation and the dollar to come down is for Ghanaians to benefit, is that not it? But if inflation is coming down and the dollar is also coming down and there is still suffering, is that what we want?” he asked.

He further argued that economic stability should be reflected in the cost of living, pointing to rising utility bills and transport fares as some of the challenges confronting households and businesses.

“You cannot have a stable economy with people suffering. Electricity bills, water bills, petrol and transport fares have all gone up. Traders are complaining because people are not buying their goods,” Dr Bawumia added.

Also, at the same event, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia urged the party to focus on making realistic and achievable promises as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.

He said the party must ensure that its campaign pledges are practical and can be fulfilled if it wins power, rather than making ambitious promises that may prove difficult to deliver.

According to Dr Bawumia, developments under the current National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration should serve as a lesson to political parties about the importance of making credible commitments to voters.

He argued that Ghanaians have become more cautious about lofty campaign promises and expect political leaders to present plans that can be translated into tangible results.

Dr Bawumia assured the public that the NPP would adopt a more practical approach to its 2028 campaign, with promises designed to be workable and deliverable.

He further slammed the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) for making many lofty promises which they have failed to deliver.

According to Dr Bawumia, the NDC has been exposed after a catalogue of unfulfilled promises to Ghanaians.

Dr Bawumia stated, “Promises made to win power must be promises we can keep because time tests every promise. Today there is something called a few moments later.

Everything you say is on the internet, so if you are given the mandate and you fail to deliver, the Ghanaian people will play your promises back to you.

NDC made so many lofty promises in opposition, but today they have been exposed as being incompetent at fulfilling their promises. So we will go into the 2028 elections with costed ideas, practical ideas, and workable ideas. That is the lesson for all Ghanaians and all political parties”.
