KAREN BLEIER | AFP via Getty Images Share on Twitter Share on Facebook Share on Pocket DR Power Equipment has recalled about 42,860 walk-behind trimmer mowers sold in the United States after receiving 19 reports of the machines catching fire. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notice, posted Oct. 8, says grass and debris can build up inside the mowers and ignite.
The fire reports included two reports of minor injuries, such as blisters on hands and feet, according to the CPSC. About 340 more units were sold in Canada.
The CPSC says consumers should “stop using the recalled trimmer mowers immediately” and contact DR Power Equipment for a free repair kit.
The recall covers DR Power Pilot and Premier trimmer mowers, walk-behind machines used to cut grass along edges, fences, and rough areas. The mowers are orange and black, with the DR Power logo on top of the motor and on top of the frame above the cutter head, according to the CPSC.
The mowers are labeled Premier or Pro on the side of the frame, and the model number is printed on a label on the side of the frame. All serial numbers of the following models are included.
Pilot models: T4X1076DMN, T4X1076DMNR, T4X1076DMNSD, T4X1176DMN, T4X1176DMN-1 and T4X1176DMNR. Premier models: TR43076DMN and TR43076DMNR.
The mowers were sold at Ace, Tractor Supply, Bomgaars, and other home improvement, hardware, and independent power equipment stores nationwide, and online at drpower.com. Sales ran from November 2022 through July 2026, with prices from $380 to $550. Generac Power Systems of Waukesha, Wisconsin, imported the mowers, which were made in the United States and Vietnam.
According to the CPSC, grass and debris can accumulate inside the trimmer mowers and ignite, posing a risk of serious injury or death from fire and burn hazards. The injuries reported so far were minor, but a fire can spread to clothing, dry grass, or nearby structures.
Because the mowers were sold for nearly four years, some may have changed hands. Anyone who bought one secondhand should check the model number and contact DR Power about the free repair kit.
The remedy is a free repair kit, which comes with installation instructions. Owners who have concerns about installing the kit can contact DR Power Equipment to schedule a free installation at an authorized dealer, according to the CPSC.
The CPSC notice lists DR Power’s toll-free number as 800-854-3194, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday, and its email as recall@drpower.com. The company’s free repair kit page, which lists the recalled models and links to a request form, gives 800-929-5018 as its contact number for the same hours. The company has also posted its formal recall notice.
Until the repair is done, owners should not use the mower. If a mower was used recently, it should cool completely before being stored near anything flammable.
Anyone who has had a fire, a near miss or an injury involving one of these mowers can report it to the CPSC through SaferProducts.gov. Those reports help regulators track whether a fix is working.
Most of the injuries tied to this recall were minor burns, but any burn deserves attention. Burns that are large or deep, or that are on the face, hands, feet, or genitals, should be checked by a clinician. Signs of infection, such as spreading redness, swelling, or fever, also need medical care.
Anyone with a burn who has trouble breathing, or who was exposed to heavy smoke in an enclosed space such as a garage, should seek emergency care right away.
For safe storage, owners should keep power equipment away from fuel cans, dry leaves, and other flammable materials, especially in enclosed spaces. A working smoke alarm in or near the garage adds protection for the whole household.
The most important step is simple: find the model label on the side of the frame, compare it with the recalled model numbers, and stop using the mower if it matches until the free repair is complete. The full list of current recalls is on the CPSC recalls page.
